QCQ is short for “Quotation-Comment-Question.” It begins with a Quotation of 1-3 sentences. It then has a Comment. And it then asks a Question that encourages engagement from others. A good QCQ gives you something to bring to the table and offers something worth discussing in class. Earn full credit (1000 points) for a QCQ that touches all 3 bases – and is in on time.

Quotation (with page number or parag number or time stamp if video/audio)

“Publishing used to require access to a printing press, and as a result the act of publishing something was limited to a tiny fraction of the population, and reaching a population outside a geographical limited area was even more restricted. Now, once a user connects to the internet, he has access to a platform that is at once global and free.” (page77)

Comment (250-500 words)

I thought this quote was really interesting, and I had never thought of what publishing meant and how it has changed over the years. The first dispersion of news would just be word of mouth, and then eventually newspapers and other paper sources became a thing, and then TVs and such had great power, and now the internet has all your new needs at the click of a button. Like the quote says, publishing requires a printing press that is quite popular in industrial publishing centers, but an individual trying to have one is very difficult, not to mention learning how to use it. And I would assume they are pretty expensive. This really narrows down publishing abilities to a small number of the population. Over the recent years, we as a society have shifted gears to a more digital world, including the news. For many Americans to view the news in the morning, they can hop onto any news outlet’s website and read the headlines, not even having to leave the bed. The internet gives people the ability not only to view published items much easier but also to publish anything their heart desires. It is effortless these days to publish something on the internet, and that information is available worldwide in a second. The internet is a powerful tool and has definitely shifted the way we publish things forever.

Question

Do we think traditional ways of communicating news will ever be as strong now that social media is taking over?
